File cabinets come in a variety of sizes, which of course means that they have varying numbers of drawers. So sit back and relax while I tell you about the most popular ones.
The 2 drawer file cabinet
A small cabinet like this can be sufficient for a small business, or just under your desk. If it is a lateral cabinet however they can actually be quite large even for a two drawer one.
A stereotypical 2 drawer file cabinet is vertical based, metallic with a simple handle and a lock. It would usually also slide, which can be removed. As I said earlier it would be suitable for a small business or a home office so long as you don’t need much space. It could also be used for children to hold their school files and store for safe keeping, as well as keeping your bills and receipts in order.
A more home-based one would be a wood file cabinet and lateral; this means it is a longer width so can hold more of a range of items such as DVDs and CDs. If you wished it could even hold clothing or jewellery. However it is not made for that, so lets assume you are holding your files in there. You can purchase a two drawer wooden lateral cabinet for $350 up to $600.
The 3 drawer file cabinet
A 3 drawer vertical style cabinet is sufficient enough for a small company; however you can get these in different styles. A lot of three drawer file cabinets come in a combination of sizes, for example: the bottom drawer for larger letter storage, and two regular drawers; this would be suitable for a home office for storing your bills and information. Another combination is the three drawers are all letter drawers, made for a medium sized company storing file transactions.
You can also get a vertical file cabinet in a wooden material such as oak, which looks better in my opinion. The finish of oak looks much more appealing than metallic, but I guess it depends on the style of where you would keep it.
And last but not least the lateral style three drawer file cabinet. The lateral means it is wider than a vertical version. The 3 drawer lateral is more appealing to me as it looks more balanced, you can store a lot of files in them and you can buy it for around $510. They often are available in a nice black, which would fit in nicely in an office.
The 4 drawer file cabinet
Now we are getting to the big boys of the business. A 4 drawer is still no 5 drawer though; however it does offer a large range of storage. You can buy an 18 inch wide vertical 4 drawer cabinet for about $130 that is a bargain! This one offers 4 letter-sized drawers in a grey colour (or as it may be called, “metallic charcoal”). The 2 top drawers on this lock, whereas the bottom two typically do not.
Some companies also offer 4 drawer file cabinets in both vertical and lateral 4 drawer cabinets; the vertical one is similar to the one mentioned above, but the lateral one looks great. Lateral cabinets are a personal favourite of mine compared to vertical, they offer better space, and they look more attractive. Usually they are offered in them more boring colors, from black to light grey. The cabinet has side-to-side rails and holds letters in its four 30 inch wide drawers. They also have a new lock, which makes it so that you can only open one drawer at a time so you can’t tip it over and hurt yourself.
The 5 drawer file cabinet
Looking for a big cabinet are you? Whether it is a thin vertical cabinet or a huge lateral cabinet they are going to supply you with a lot of storage space for your files.
A 5 drawer vertical file cabinet is available at around $400, the 5 drawers means extra space for your legal sized documents. It comes at 18 inches wide and 60 inches high, perfect for hanging your files. The best thing about the vertical aspect of this is that it will not take up much space, but because of the height it will allow you to store a lot of stuff.
A lateral 5 drawer cabinet differentiates because it is much wider, it will take up quite a lot of space, but at the same time it will give you more volume to store your much needed files. Lateral cabinets are more often made out of wood such as oak because it looks more appealing (because it is so big, it needs to be better looking than a vertical type). This factor means it will be sturdier and last longer.
One important factor of buying a lateral file cabinet, especially if it has a lot of drawers is to have a locking system so only one drawer can be opened at once. If you do not have this on your filing cabinet it could mean it falling onto you and potentially threatening your safety, so make sure it does include that if it will be used a lot.
Well I hope that has given you a good insight into the different drawer sizes that are available!
